Don’t do this. Don’t publish documents online where everyone can get to it. Best, don’t put documents on the internet at all, even behind a password

This comm has in the rules “community to talk about the Fediverse and all it’s related services using ActivityPub”. So posts like this are going to be received poorly here
If you are for real, I think, in presents for parents it’s not about what exactly you buy. It’s about the caring thought. Maybe the guitar would have made her happy and you had a plan to get it. But the plan fell short. It happens. Instead of getting tunnel-visioned on the plan I propose you to think what else could you get her that would make her happy with the funds you have. And next year, start saving another month earlier. Maybe that plan will pan out

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Tesseract dev injects malicious code into browser to illegally DDOS the dbzer0 instanceEnglish
14·11 days agoAh, but you see “asshole with a lifetime of poor emotional self regulation” is not “scheming fascist with an agenda”. That’s what I’m arguing with in your take
And in the scope of the question, which used plural “devs losing their minds”, I think that it would be a vilification to effectively say “they snap because they are fascists”
There are and will be non-fascist (and IMO also non-asshole) devs who snap. And I think some times it will be because of the feeling of responsibility for something, “either I fix it or it won’t get fixed” situation, lack of social/team/peer safety net, … (in my first comment I tried to rather portray the situation than name all those things because I just can’t name all of them)

10·11 days agoThe question I responded to was rather a general one. And I think that seeing all dev-related dramas as “that guy was just fascist all along” is similar to saying “all X are thieves” - a simplification that is easy to choose because it addresses our emotions regarding what has happened but not necessarily always the best explanation
That is when they have a meltdown and quit the project because demand for bug fixes or new features it too much pressure.
That requires self-awareness to ask oneself “maybe I need a break?” and I think such decision can be hard to make due to sunken cost fallacy. I think that with the pressure of the pings about bugs and requests etc, it’s easy to get into mindset of “it’s either on or off” with nothing in between. Because 5 bugs solved means only 3 other to go.
And the second option is to dig in harder and in this case “curate the feed. All of it. Whatever that means”I’m not saying that that person did not act out of an agenda. But I can imagine a set of choices that lead to a catastrophic breaking point

39·12 days agoI think it’s the pressure and the solo developer model
You put something out. It seems to be running. There are bugs. You fix them. There are more bugs (pareto is a PITA). You fix them too. Someone accuses you of sacrificing kittens in the basement. There are ideas for features and more bugs. Some worded in an entitled or just tone-deaf way. Very often you’re the only one working on the project and saying “I accept PRs” somehow became received as a FU. It becomes hard to put the project away for just a week
You are perpetually in “I-fix-it” mode
Not to mention that in order to even start a project like that one needs to have at least a bit of “fuck it, I’ll do it myself” mentalityIt’s a pity that !unfinishedprojects@forum.unfinishedprojects.net wound down. I hoped it might have been a space for projects to find communities. As we see around, it doesn’t require a 10 person team with a kanban board to write something that works. But on the other side of the spectrum I think a project needs some sort of community around it. So even if there’s only one dev, someone else could write the tutorials, less technical parts of docs, help new deployments etc
Well, they only say they won’t work on it. But can we keep it alive as community without forking?
I hope Logseq OG will be accepting PRs. I’d hate to go back to Obsidian

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Running my own fediverse instance for the people who need it the mostEnglish
1·2 months agoThe content is going to be both text-based and media like videos pictures etc. Currently we are on a telegram super group but that doesn’t cut it and can be lost. Is piefed or Lemmy a good fit for this? I have been here since 2023 and I think it would be. One other issue is privacy the identity of the members should be protected at all costs.
If this is only for having a place to socialize, Fedi will work
But if you want privacy, maybe check out delta chat? https://chatmail.at/doc/relay/getting_started.html
You probably will still need a domain for the relay and somewhere to run it but when used in one account mode, delta relay stores nothing on users. It only relays the messages
They probably won’t even start looking for them
And I’m afraid of the opposite: that most will just upload their IDs everywhere and allow “you don’t have to worry if you have nothing to hide” to become accepted stance

Fediverse@lemmy.world•What would be your opinion on a lemmy/piefed instance that's run like Athen democracy?English
0·3 months agoI have also been wondering about this. But
admins and mods are selected sortitionally( randomly) from people who apply
That’s your point of starvation. The application
I think, instead, everyone on the instance should be a voting member. And the decisions should be taken based on some requirement on the votes
- person one flags a post -> that’s a vote
- maybe add a header that this post is under review? The voting process should probably be taking some time
- another person flags the same post -> that’s a vote
- someone else says it should not be flagged -> that’s a vote in opposite direction
- ??? <- can be changed by an instance wide vote too
- post/comment/user is either moderated or not, depending on votes and logic from the previous vote
In order to boost participation, randomly ask an active account to cast a vote on an ongoing discussion
I think there should be some way for “backend admin” to step in and ban something. But they should only do that for spam/csam/scam/etc. Nothing else, no matter how crazy or rude the take is
(btw, maybe the instance could also normalize asking someone to reword their take if it’s rude or can be interpreted badly out of context?)

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Commands/formatting for posting to Lemmy from MastodonEnglish
1·3 months agoAlso, no hashtags. They won’t break anything, Lemmy simply doesn’t support hashtags
True for Lemmy, but Piefed does support hashtags, and those are essential for Mastodon. So maybe stripping those is not a strict requirement
Also, for testing I guess one could use !playground@piefed.social
I understand. But with how downvotes are sometimes, but often IMO, used - a vote on agree/disagree, in a way that feature becomes “I don’t want to see opinions of people that disagree with me”. It does make it exotic
So the chances that it will be developed and tested is rather low, chances that there will be enough social support for having it is rather low
The problem with that is then instead of having 15 downvotes and two comments with a bunch of upvotes you will end up with 15 (probably less but just to portray my point) comments all saying more or less the same. And since (IIRC) Lemmy does not have notifications one could enable on other comments, you would be discussing the same thing in 15 separate threads because your interlocutors won’t see your responses in the other threads
I mean - without downvotes we have no way of signalling “I don’t agree with this take, this and that comment voice my opinions”
But we don’t have a mechanic for “I’ve seen this and didn’t clap”, other than a downvote
people downvote instead of shouting back. OK fine. Except, for whatever reason, I personally don’t feel this overwhelming need to stamp aggressively on other people’s “wrong” opinions
So for you downvoting is aggressive but shouting back is not?
IMO the truth is mostly pretty simple: it means “Muh! Me no like!”. Which is completely uninteresting as well as (I argue) toxic
Apart from votes meaning not being set in stone, I think they do serve a very important role. You can’t realistically be having 5/10/50 simultaneous threads, especially if the points are the same. Someone upvoting can be a signal “I agree with that take”, without essentially spamming the discussion with such comments. Someone downvoting can mean “I don’t agree”. Someone downvoting one comment and upvoting a response is essentialy taking part in discussion - “I don’t agree with you, that other person is right”. Without muddying the exchange. It’s a mechanic to have a social discussion without it looking like a chat during hype-train.
When we gather IRL and there is, let’s say, 50 of us, we will be using claps, murmurs, whistling, maybe short shouts. But for sure it would be impossible to discuss a thing if everyone in the room would form as little as one sentence. That’s what votes sometimes are - room temperature of the audience
having the visibility of my content pushed down
I might be wrong, but I think most use “New” sort, and I just checked, the default algo on .world is “Active”. So downvotes won’t push posts down
telling me with the downvote button that my contribution is worthless
The definition of downvote is not set in stone, a lot of people define and use it differently. For some it’s “I don’t agree”, for some “it’s wrong but I’m not going to report” and for some… I have suspicion that for some it’s “I’ve seen the title, I’m not interested”. The fact that people don’t agree with you does not mean they see your point as worthless. They just don’t agree. And I suspect, most often people would just downvote and move on, the cross between those who downvote and comment will be much smaller. And actually the fact that they commented means that they decided it’s worthwhile to spend time on disagreeing with you

I totally understand but unfortunately sometimes “it is, what it is”
