  • There well never be a federated Youtube for instance. Think about that the storage that Google uses since videos are not really deleted, and the bandwidth to server that much video.

Until there is. Someday someone will create a PeerTube plugin or some other piece of software that will tackle this. I’m thinking distributed storage, automatic mirroring to other instances when more bandwidth is needed for a popular video, voluntary storage donation from clients (got 10GB of expendable storage on your device? Donate it to the network), or something I can’t even think of. There are so many possibilities in this space. I won’t accept that it’ll never be possible.

  • I’m say loops is fedi-washed like a reactionary. There’s no other instances, apparently it dies use the activityhub protocol.

Loops is very new. Completely normal for a new service to have one main instance by the devs, you need an instance to test your stuff with real users. The server was open sourced in September and is now at beta6. There are in fact 8 loops servers in operation. This isn’t “fedi-washed”. It’s just very new. Give it some time and please be nice to people who build stuff for the fediverse in their free time. We need them.

  • I saw another comment on PieFed raise the same point of confusing again, so I think it’s worth addressing, where the user squirrel said: “I see Bonfire mentioned a lot on the fediverse report and elsewhere, but I still don’t understand what it is. I went to their website and it’s a wall of text that sounds like marketing. I don’t see a demo or a flagship instance.”

    Oh shit… I’m in the report 😳
