I am unreasonably excited about this. Where I live, there’s no decent options for Internet or cell signal. Which means normal calling/texting doesn’t work, and regular Wi-Fi calling/texting is choppy at the best of times. My whole family uses WhatsApp for everything. I’m hoping I can get them to switch to something like this once it’s stable.

Did Dan ever get the messaging service Sup going? Tried to look it up, but his name being Dansup is throwing a wrench in my Googlefu.

I’ve tried with Firefox and Chrome. I think I have a bum phone, tbh.

On Android (A53) if that matters, but whenever I try to do that with bookwyrm it crashes my phone, and it forces a restart whenever I try to open it.

That’s the whole reason I signed up for it. I’m new to Fediverse stuff, and not the most computer literate. I’ve never been on Instagram, and just used imgur to post pics on reddit. I like open source stuff on principle, and I figured pixelfed was probably a better place than imgur, and I wasn’t sure if there was a fediverse/open source version of imgur.

I now use it to hoarde stolen memes, mainly from u/Stamets on startrek.website. lol.

I count for at least 10. Lol. I’ve made a bunch of alts, between trying to find an instance I vibe with, and then finding more instances I vibe enough with to use when there’s downtime. Lol

This is unrelated to OP’s stuff, but I’ve never had a chance to interact with an admin, and I have a question if you don’t care. I’m mostly computer illiterate, but I thought a fun way to learn a few things would be to set up a single user lemmy instance. Not to host any communities or anything, just to host my account. But with the recent shit about CSAM I’m now worried about that. Like, would I be at risk of something like that getting on my server if it was on a server I federated with? I don’t want to risk exposing myself to that kind of stuff. I’m very glad I wasn’t one of the unfortunate people to click on one of those links last week, and it genuinely freaks me out. I don’t wanna see that shit.

Admittedly not a techie person, so anything on that side of things I can’t speak to at all, but on the political side of the fence (politics is what you’re describing) it seems like we’re in the nation state building era of the fediverse. Lines are being drawn, borders created, and rules invented. I think it’ll take some time for the dust to settle, but eventually we’ll probably end up with several super large (relatively, anyway) instances, run by major players, probably corporate, and a bunch of little servers that are forced to either be niche communities unto themselves (think Cuba) or effectively vassal states of the larger instances (think Micronesia) or run by one of the larger ones, but semi independent (think Guam).

But honestly, I still think that’s better than the alternatives. That sea of fediverse Cubas is just recreating forums in a new way, and I’d love to get back to that. And even if there are massive corporately run instances, it seems like you’ll still have way more freedom than you currently do under the meta/reddit/Twitter climate. (With that caveat that I do not know things about tech, so maybe not?)

But no, despite lemmy being a reddit lookalike, or Mastodon being twitteresque, none of these are replacements for those. They’re their own thing, that will evolve and become more and more distinct as time goes on. Hopefully anyway. I still like it here way better than Reddit, even aside from my personal feelings about open source software, political bullshit surrounding rich people and corps. I like the climate here, there’s plenty of content, and I feel like I can have actual conversations again (like this one!) Instead of just me being baited by someone looking for karma like on reddit. Yes, I hope Reddit dies, and yes, I came to lemmy from reddit, but even if neither of those were the case, I still think it’s nicer here, and that the model has potential. Again, I don’t know shit about tech. For all I know this isn’t super scalable. But from the view point of instances as states instead of email, I see it being pretty expandable. We just have to figure out how to prevent America from nuking anyone. :p

Okay, so, basically, you know how like, 99.9999% of everything is empty vacuum? Like, the vast, vast majority of space is just empty nothingness? Quantum foam says that that’s not exactly the case, and that constantly particles and anti particles are being created and destroying each other. So instead of empty nothingness, you have this sort of cosmic, bubbling, boiling foam of creation and annihilation.

Or, at least, I think. I’m no rocket surgeon.

I just made an account on literature.cafe last night. :) Haven’t gotten around to logging in and doing anything yet, but I like having a couple alts to see unique local feeds and such, and yours looked so interesting! I love how federation allows for those kinds of interest-specific instances. Can’t wait to explore yours. :)
