Before the app was released, I noticed that suddenly there were many new users. Previously, making an account wasn’t open to everyone, but apparently that has changed too.
Who reads this anyway? Nobody, that’s…. Oh wait. Some people actually do. I guess I should put something worth reading in here then. Err… Let’s go with lorem impsum for the time being.
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Nam eu libero vitae augue pretium sollicitudin…

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Whats the best alternative to twitch and youtube?English
5·14 days agoNo shortage of trash, but that’s true for all platforms.
I just used the customize button on the top right corner and moved politics and a bunch of other junk to the “hide” column. This way, the home feed has a chance of containing things worth watching. Mostly though, I just use Odysee for watching the few channels I care about. Incidentally, I arranged the “followed” section to the top of the list.
As a result, I don’t see any conspiracy or MAGA nonsense at all.

17·14 days agoPeertube for long tech videos. You’ll find lots of linux people here. Sure, there’s pretty much everything else too, but that’s what I use Peertube for.
Odysee for a wide range of videos in general. Many youtubers have backed up their videos here.
Loops for short videos… more like a tiktok clone really.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Is there any way to modify community subscription weight to push up quieter communities you want to hear from?English
7·1 month agoSorting by scaled helps a little bit, but some communities just post soooo much that they drown out everything else. In order to fix that you would need “multireddits”, which don’t exist on Lemmy.
For the time being, I recommend making two accounts and using one exclusively for subscribing to the really busy communities. The other one could be used for everything else. It’s also an opportunity to try out a different instance.
If you find that one feed is getting dominated by a single community again, you may need to create a third account to manage your subscriptions appropriately.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•how do you explain selfhosting to the non-techies in your life?English
6·4 months agoLike a cab, but it’s your car and you take care of everything.
If you need a car only once a year when going to the airport, a cab will be cheaper. If you need to go somewhere at least once a week, driving your own car will be cheaper. Likewise, if you need only a little bit of cloud storage for your photos, free iCloud or Google Drive might be fine. If you need a whole lot of storage, self-hosting becomes cheaper.
When you take a cab, do you need to worry about maintenance, gasoline, insurance, or other things? No. The same goes for cloud storage. When you throw your photos on Google Drive, you don’t need to worry about electricity bills, security updates, or hardware maintenance.
When you drive your own car, you need to be a responsible driver and a car owner. Maintenance is your responsibility. Likewise, self-hosting means you need to be a responsible server admin.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Have you tried self-hosting your own email recently?English
2·5 months agoI really like the idea of having my own server, where I could have a bunch of cool stuff like email, VPN, Nextcloud, and so much more. The primary reason why I don’t have a server like that, is because I can’t trust myself to follow the best practices. For a while now, I’ve been thinking that I should hire a proper professional to take care of all that.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Haven't posted these in a while, but there's not much change:English
1·7 months agoYeah, the y-axis is unlabeled, but at least the title still tells you what it is: traffic. Doesn’t even have any numbers, so there’s no need to ask about the unit either.
This is more like the graphs made at the marketing department where km becomes KM, because it looks cooler. Same goes of MG, because why not. Is that milligrams or megagrams? Don’t worry about it. I mean, it’s just numbers, so who cares anyway. It’s not like anyone tries to calculate something with them. It’s well known in the marketing department that no human on earth is able do things like that.
Interesting.
Relying on your intuition really is no substitute to actually looking things up. If I had a tattoo on the back of my hand, it should say something like that, so that I won’t forget it. Keeps happening all the time.
On the other hand, the internet is always more than glad to correct my mistakes, so I still see this mess as a win-win for everyone.
IMO link B is the “most original” one. Sort of like an “authoritative source”, if you will.

82·9 months agoI don’t know about you, but I’ve been #Bloomscrolling lately. As far as I’m concerned, the MAUs are here for the wows.
Risky comment of the day. Maybe they just don’t like to hear what I have to say. Maybe I could have been a little less blunt about it. Who knows. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Both extremes exist. Hence, the condition about loosing your grip on reality.
People above a certain age should begin to avoid social media and stick with more private forms of communication like email, phone calls, signal messages and f2f discussions. Once your ability to tell fact from fiction deteriorates enough, announcing your opinions publicly becomes increasingly problematic.

Can confirm. There are lots of “boring” videos on Loops. Like, check this out. Yes, it’s an entire channel dedicated to chickens. I mean, it’s nice and relaxing, but nowhere near as addicting and engaging as tiktok or instagram videos. I’ll still count that as a win.
Regardless, @billinkc still rocks.
