  • When a company uses Embrace Extend Extinguish, they are relying on network effects to drive people to their side. So let’s say Threads comes out, starts federating, has a big established userbase, and then they come out with some new, proprietary killer feature. It could be great moderation tools - something kbin and the fediverse need, no doubt about it - but whatever the feature is, it draws users away from the existing fediverse infrastructure and into Threads. Threads then makes massive changes to the ActivityPub spec, building the walled garden back up again. Only this time, they’ve actually siphoned off some of the users you originally had in the community. The result isn’t the status quo, Meta peeled away users who otherwise would have stayed.

By the way, while a “small community of tech nerds” is perfectly fine in its own right, I would argue the fediverse has already grown beyond that community. They’re a large contingent no doubt, but there’s also law enthusiasts, news outlets, game developers, users from Germany, Japan, France, Finland, and I follow them all. To see them leave for Threads would be a shame.

  • That’s up to you! There’s so many different disciplines within programming that you will learn some easier than others, and you will enjoy some more than others. You said you’re learning web development right now - it may be that you don’t like web development, not development. You could also try scripting, you could try databases or backend development. If you don’t like Javascript, you may like Python.

If you desire the opportunity to peer-program, you know writing code with someone else together, then you may look for projects that have active Discord channels so you can join a voice/video call.

And your general anxiety about the state of the internet being controlled by a handful of massive companies isn’t merely paranoia - a lot of people feel the same anxieties so you are absolutely not alone in that regard. Just make small things you like making - don’t worry about what framework it has to be made in, or what language you used.

  • Oh man… I remember reading this years ago and aspiring to be the Fantastic Programmer.

This did NOT age well. Seriously consider some of the traits that this article is describing and play the game “Are We Describing a Programmer or a Zuckerburgian Psychopath?”

    • A tendency to suggest wacky and unrealistic solutions in meetings
    • Routinely applies for an extension to file taxes
    • Antagonistic when asked to maintain code for
      backwards-compatability
    • Dropped out of high-school, university, law or medical school because they didn’t see the point anymore
    • Disinterested by the outcome of elections
    • Cashes-in their 401k to fund their next venture
    • Has tried every pick-up line there is and has the slap-marks on his cheeks to prove it
    • Owns swag from Enron
    • They suddenly pause and stare into space in the middle of a conversation, then abandon you to hurry back to their terminal with no explanation
    • A destructive pursuit of perfection
    • Contempt for delivery dates
    • Substantial refactoring on the eve of a deadline
