Fediverse is changing. People used to put the text of images, like comics, in the body of the OP to be more accessible, but I haven’t seen that in ages. It’s something I noticed.

1·7 days agoThat’s actually exactly the reason why I didn’t upgrade. I have miniITX board with a very low TDP CPU and there’s not been anything as efficient as this one.
If you mean that faster hardware can do tasks faster: this thing has no problem running all the services I want/need, which includes some game servers.
If you are counting costs of power, also factor in the cost of new hardware as opposed to the one you have around or can be secondhand for cheap.

3·7 days agoThe missing link is networking. You can use VPNs all you want, but in the end you’re using an uplink to your ISP who can shut it down at any moment. Some countries turn off the internet when things get rowdy, so it’s already in the playbook.
Was looking into a mesh last year, but I’d be a floating island. Can’t transmit long range, this angers the people in charge, too. Not sure how to overcome this part.

1·7 days agoDoes the message become invalid if someone wrote a bit and then asked an llm to rewrite it because they are not confident in their writing? These people are ashamed to admit they do this because of the backlash they get here, but let this be one of the only good use cases of llms, and it’s what they’re good at.

3·7 days agoFor hardware? You don’t have to use top of the line hardware to host these things. My homelab if you want to call it that is nearly 10 years old in terms of hardware, but the software is up to date.

If you want to avoid this, use a rolling release distro.
Joey was the superior app. Shame it didn’t get as widespread as the others.

1·8 months agoI bring 1 of my backup disks to my inlaws. I go there regularly so it’s a matter of swapping them when I’m there.

4·9 months agoI have mini-ITX board in a mini case. 4 bays, 16 GB RAM of DDR3-L and a slow but very low TDP CPU. This thing is very low power but it’s on 24/7.
Runs home assistant with zigbee, rtl433 and whatever it detects over the network. A few older game servers (minecraft, minetest/luanti, quake 2), miniDLNA, … Arch Linux, so rolling release and always up to date with the latest versions.
Served me greatly and I haven’t upgraded because it still does what I want and I can’t find any modern CPU with a TDP this low.

4·1 year agoI’ve said it before, but I joined this instance when Reddit closed the api and the only time I see “tankie” stuff is when someone mentions how rampant it is on this instance, but not on the instance itself. I guess I subscribe to non-tankie content (all across the fediverse and not only this instance).

I setup miniDLNA once, many years ago and it just kept working. Downside is that I completely forgot how it’s set up.

9·2 years agoI use Hardkernel products for my kid’s PCs, as pihole, etc. Their products are sold under the Odroid brand. I have the Odroid C1 and C4 line of SBCs and they work as expected. The C1 used to be my mediaplayer, now it runs a game server and pihole. A little older, but it still has use.
I thought it was the influx of new posters who don’t take the time to transcribe their images, a growth in users that surpasses the transcribers. I guess this chart says otherwise and the transcribing users may indeed have dwindled.
