Copy party works pretty well, I’ve liked it. That said I don’t have mine open to everyone, it requires a password for view/read/edit rights or whatnot, which you can easily divy out using a config file. (Not the most secure, but that’s because I haven’t put in any protections myself)
I use a split tunnel for the VPN. You can route specific applications/services to go through the VPN, and leave the Plex access how it is currently if you want. I have my jellyfin server set up that one of my browsers and qbitorrent all go through the VPN tunnel that’s always connected, then RustDesk, my file server, jellyfin and what not runs locally. So I don’t have to lose access to Jellyfin when acquiring any content.
Note: you can actually kick off a download through the VPN, and tell it to download sequentially, then just refresh the movies list in your player(jellyfin for me) and start watching the movie while it downloads. Thought that was a nice surprise.
I thought HDMI to Ethernet to HDMI was cool the first time we had to do it for a project in a large room. Hdmi starts running into issues at around 25-50ft. You can go a lot further with the Ethernet cable
It doesn’t need much RAM, my file server/jellyfin server runs on an old laptop I just have sitting with the lid closed on a desk near my router. I RustDesk into it for anything I need, and I have a split VPN tunnel running at all times, so anything I acquire goes through another IP.
(Had a 256gb SSD laying around I put in it for the OS, and 2 1tb USB hhd’s hold media). Jellyfin runs on both our cheap Roku TV’s, and our phones if we ever wanted)

So that’s really why they should be good for Jellyfin/File servers, as the data isn’t needing to be stored in container, just the run files. I suppose the config files as well.
When I reverse proxy to my network using wireguard (set up on the jellyfin server, I also think I have a rustdesk server on there) on the other hand, is it worth using a container, or is that just the same either way?
I have shoved way to many things on an old laptop, but I never have to touch it really, and the latest update mint put out actually cured any issues I had. I used to have to reboot once a week or so to get everything back online when it came to my Pihole and shit. Since the latest update I ran in September 4th, I haven’t touched it for anything. Screen just stays closed in a corner of my desk with other shit stacked on top
So let’s say I theoretically wanted to move a docker container to another device or maybe if I were re-installing an OS or moving to another distro, could I in theory drag my local docker container to an external and throw my device in a lake and pull that container off into the new device? If so … what then, I link the startups, or is there a “docker config” where they are all able to be linked and I can tell it which ones to launch on OS launch, User launch, delay or what not?
When you say binaries do you mean locally stored directories kind of like what Lutris or Steam would do for a Windows game. (Create a fake c:\ )
For me it’s lack of understanding usually. I haven’t sat down and really learned what docker is/does. And when I tried to use it once I ended up with errors (thankfully they all seemed contained by the docker) but I just haven’t gotten around to looking more into than seeing suggestions to install say Pihole in it. Pretty sure I installed Pihole outside of one. Jellyfin outside, copyparty outside, and I something else im forgetting at the moment.
I was thinking of installing a chat app in one, but I put off that project because I got busy at work and it’s not something I normally use.
I guess I just haven’t been forced to see the upsides yet. But am always wanting to learn
I was confused when I read it as well, at least I know now that I wasn’t alone. I think the next step is just opening a text editor and starting with <html></html> Forward a couple ports, maybe use caddy to route the port internally but it isn’t needed. Although if you use NOIP with Caddy getting the https cert setup seems to be pretty easy.

Would have been nice if they went to Mastodon, but I wouldn’t call them idiots. I don’t use that media format, but if there isn’t a lot of users there, I cant see the service being that useful to the users who do go there. It’s like Lemmy struggles with niches. Not enough people, want to find something or ask someone about something, you’ll hit a wall and find yourself looking for results elsewhere. Someday hopefully, but that movement from Twitter would have been a great time for activity pub to shine if it hadn’t gotten skipped over

If you are fined in one state they will ask your state to enforce the penalty and they are usually legally required to do so by the federal government.
The part of Mississippi saying it may have criminal punishments as well may have more leeway, as you won’t get extradited if it isn’t a felony in most states. But we don’t know what the criminal charges would be. At 10,000 per user signed up from their state though, I’d be weary.
Just be careful, I’m just saying it’s risky. I can see them ceasing your assets in another state because it follows the current laws. Otherwise if you found someone guilty in a state court you would just move to another state and be fine, which we know doesn’t work, or people like the my pillow guy would just move out of Minnesota where he was found guilty, to say Texas.
I don’t need to explain anything. If you want to host something with content that is illegal in another state and you choose to not put up any protections to block users from accessing the content in that state, you very well may be sued some day. If you block users from signing up from those states and/or block those IP addresses from accessing your site, you likely would have grounds for it to be dismissed before ever having to do anything. State lines do not protect you against lawsuits.
The way I view it is that Bluesky is a new company that is growing fast, while a site like Pornhub has been around longer and I’m sure has a large legal team that monitors laws all the time. If Pornhub said it was better to cut their losses and see if waiting out and or not seeing a good legal standing to fight with these states, Bluesky likely didn’t have much of a chance.
If you run any instance that is federated and has users that could sign in from that state it makes complete sense to block their IP addresses. Why on earth would someone running a Mastodon instance take on risk unlless they were in another country where there was no risk of repercussions.
If you’re just hoping that small fish won’t get fried that’s possibly true. But admins likely won’t want to find out if they will just on principles.

Yeah I looked into migrating to earth but overall it didn’t seem like a great idea. Most of the world is rife with hatred of aliens and has a very much higher percentage of trafficking aliens than native peoples. They seem to be highly focused on competing against each other rather than helping their societys grow together. When was there last war, today… that number hasn’t changed in thousands of cycles. An atmospheric scan shows catestorfic changes making it inhabitable for many life forms on the planet and yet still while thousands of species have died off around them, the primary “intelligent” species ignores it while lying to their peers trying to swindle themselves into a better standing so they can think they are better than others while dooming near everything. Maybe I’ll go in after the next thaw in about 65,000 cycles.
