Selfhosted@lemmy.world•What are the benefits of a server having multiple public IP addresses?English
4·7 months agoI just run some simple services, such as Audiobookshelf or Wallabag, behind a reverse proxy. After reading the other comments, it does not look like there would be any benefit for my use case.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•What are the benefits of a server having multiple public IP addresses?English
10·7 months agoYes, I have always used a reverse proxy which seems to eliminate the need for multiple IP addresses. It seems like having multiple IP addresses just creates additional cost and complexity, but I have seen many VPS providers offer multiple IP addresses, so I was curious if there was a use case that I was not aware of.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•What Calendar and To Do solution do you recommend?English
4·2 years agoI use Radicale for my calendars, reminders, and contacts precisely because of how minimal it is. It has been very reliable for me and is very easy to back up and restore since it is just files.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•What is your prefered way to get audiobooks/podcasts/ebooks for your audiobookshelf?English
12·2 years agoI use Downpour for Audiobooks. It is similar to Audible where audiobooks can be purchased individually, or there is a subscription that provides credits to purchase audiobooks. The audiobooks are drm-free and can be downloaded. I have not found a way to automate the download and transfer to my Audiobookshelf server, but I don’t mind doing it manually considering I average around two or three audiobooks a month.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•What is your favourite selfhosted wiki software and why?English
3·2 years agoDoku still has the typical wiki style version control. It uses other text files to keep a changelog without cluttering the markdown file.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•What is your favourite selfhosted wiki software and why?English
30·2 years agoDokuWiki for simplicity. Everything is a text file that can just be copied to a web server. It doesn’t even require a database. And since all the wiki pages are plaintext markdown files, they can still be easily accessed and read even when the server is down. This is great and why I use DokuWiki for my server documentation as well.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Mozilla Senior Director of Content explained why Mozilla has taken an interest in the fediverse and MastodonEnglish
1·2 years agoFirefox is part of the for-profit Mozilla Corporation. Donations go to the nonprofit Mozilla Foundation. Even though Mozilla Corporation is owned by Mozilla Foundation, donations cannot be transferred to it since it is still legally a for-profit business. The funds donated to Mozilla Foundation are used for advocacy work.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•What is your favorite domain name provider, and why?English
2·2 years agoI used Namecheap for several years and was happy with it, but the numerous price increases finally pushed me to switch. I recently decided on Porkbun after the many positive reviews I read online. It is affordable and has a very clean interface that doesn’t constantly nag me about purchasing other services. I’m really liking it so far.

I have had positive experiences with both Radicale and Baikal. I am not sure about the Home Assistant integration, but they both use CalDAV, so I would be surprised if there wasn’t a way of connecting them. iOS has native support for CalDAV, but Android needs the davx5 app (free on F-Droid).
