  • I don’t care much for proxmox but that’s because I live in the terminal anyway and have a lot of experience administering Linux systems. So for me it’s just an extra layer of complexity, the benefits don’t really apply when my setup has IaC, most of my containers are in Podman rather than LXCs, my backups are automated with my own scripts and cronjobs, and I only run a couple of VMs. Also it makes encrypting the base system more difficult than it is with a standard distro

  • Liberalism is a conservative ideology. Conservative meaning maintaining the status quo, which liberalism does for economic, foreign, and social policy

Edit: down vote all you want but it is true. The last time liberalism was progressive was when the divine right of kings was law of the land.

Political ideologies can broadly be categorized as reactionary (supports a real or perceived status quo ante), conservative (supports maintenance of status quo), and progressive (supports developing new systems). There are the axes of social views, economic views, etc that we apply these to. The major political parties in the US are centered around variants of liberalism, the ideology of individual rights and private property, which is focused on the status quo of imperialism, discriminatory social hierarchies, and capitalism. There are those who think these systems don’t go far enough in their repression, especially but not exclusively within the GOP. They are reactionaries. Progressive ideologies only find any foothold on the very fringes of the DNC, but they are fighting against the policies and institutions of the party itself, not really influencing it fundamentally.

I’ve written open source code and contributed to many projects. I’m more than familiar with the licensing. Some licenses like MIT give permissive rights away to businesses for private use, but copyleft ones like GPL and AGPL families (which are massively popular) absolutely do not, not without all resultant code being open source and GPL as well which is obviously not the case with LLM generated shit. Educate yourself before spewing nonsense please

  • Open source does not mean royalty free or public domain. Those individual developers who put in that labor have rights as workers, and they express them through their software licenses. It’s absolutely no different than stealing artwork or music for training data, it’s just a different medium of self expression and creativity. Your argument is like saying that since artists have digital catalogues to show off and market their work, they deserve to have it stolen for training data too.

  • I used to use a variety. I’d use Arch on my desktop/gaming machine, Fedora on my laptop, and Debian on my server. But I got the NixOS bug a few years back and now I use that everywhere. It’s great to have every change and configuration documented and available for easy review or modification, and built in generation rollbacks are a lifesaver.

Thinking of building an HTPC from some spare parts, and I think that’ll be the machine to buck the trend. Bazzite will be everything I need out of the box for that purpose without any effort for maintenance. It’s not getting customized or doing anything but games and media
