I have been on the Synapse HDD path. It was slow even for a single-user instance.

Some Android file managers support WebDAV. I’m using Amaze which unfortunately doesn’t, so instead I have DAVx5 and I can use it to browse files on the server.

Alternatively, you can use rclone in Termux to download the server files to the device. I use this to sync music from my server.

For your PDF use case, unfortunately you will need to first download the file before opening it.

Insanely powerful, consumes much less resource and is very easy to setup. It does one thing (cloud storage) and it does it well.

Not sure if this fits your need, but if you just want to own the files, maybe try playing locally?

I don’t have an unlimited data plan, so I use “Gelli” which can download from Jellyfin and play them offline. However, it’s buggy and haven’t been updated in a while, so I’m planning on ditching that, and switch to locally storing the music files.

I found an Android music player named “Symphony”. It reads directories as album, as well as metadata. Importantly, it also saves the queue for me. I have a self-hosted Nextcloud so I can sync music to my phone. Symphony would read them from the directory.

Yes, but you have to selfhost your own instance. Big servers don’t have that, and the ones that have probably require payment.
