What are you asking? I bought a lifetime subscription to Plex pass.

I looked at and look at it as an investment. 13 years ago it could have been a good decision or a bad one.

The idea behind a lifetime membership is a means to spark fund raising, and I thought then “I use this a lot, it works for me I’m gonna pay for it”.

So, you’ve got option. You can just roll your own, or go to jellyfin.

I’m one of the first people to complain about the incessant need to grow 20% a year to appease shareholders and how unsustainable that is. But I also realize as I said, stuff cost money and “just breaking even” will also grow in cost every year with everything else, so… Even in that perfect world you were describing, there would be an increase in cost applied to that project.

Much like I am sure you expect at the very least a cost of living raise each year. I’m also guessing you’re glad your paycheck to bills ratio isn’t what it was 20y ago. (or I can say, that for me that is true). I’m pretty happy my discretionary money is more now than it was then. I bet those developers also want that same thing.

Glad I bought the Plex Pass like 13 years ago. While I understand everyone seems to think everything should be free, I’m sure your boss wishes you worked for free too, but the world doesn’t work that way.

I’m OK supporting products I use , and Plex is an example of this for me. It was a well spend $75 in 2013

I’m in the same boat. I’d say that my current setup is still not back to ‘normal’ since the issue with the certificates on the second gen devices.

I was able to cast to a CCA yesterday for a few hours after rebooting it again.

I have, over the years gone all in with the CCAs which is great when it works but sucks being tied to google. I have 11 active running CCAs connected to two separate 12 channel amps that have wired speakers throughout my house.

I use Google Mini’s in those locations with their default speaker set to the CCA feeding that room’s speakers. I also have groups “Basement” “Upstairs” “outside” etc that allow me to group them into larger zones. This is all very awesome when it works, but like we found out last week falls apart when there’s a problem on that house of cards.

We can via apps directly manually ‘cast’ from YTM or Spotify or whatever (podcast app) or just ask the mini in the room to play music or play music on ‘group speaker name’.

I got here from ‘Casatunes’ which when I was using it, was a PCIE card you installed in a windows machine and then installed their software (that ran on IIS) and it created a web service where the PCIE card (a soundblaster) had 6 3.5mm jacks (6 zones) as output, and then the software allowed you to assign 4 different inputs. Biggest issue I had with it, is as I moved from Sirius XM to streaming the service I opted to go with wasn’t supported. Eventually I migrated to the CCA approach.

I’d love a way to setup 11 Pi’s (although not at today’s prices) with some open source protocol that replaced googles casting. The problem then would be getting some local speaker (google mini) to interact with it, or even your phone (spotify/ytm to ‘cast’ to that open protocol). Whatever the long term solution it would need to be easy to use or nobody but me will use it.

spin up a second pihole docker and upgrade them separately so they can failover to the other one while upgrading. I do not have an issue with 20min lose of DNS after updating my pi.hole docker, but I did spin up a second one when I wanted to try unbound+pi.hole and just kept them both up/running.

And why the old “ice boxes” are top load only. And why most boat fridges/freezers are top-load, because energy is scares/finite when disconnected from power.

I’ll check this out. But some things really need an app. Like gps for payees like ynab4 app has.

But the speed is certainly a factor.

I moved to actual about 3 months ago from YNAB4. I’d moved to nYNAB then back to YNAB4 after a second price hike and then to actual.

No regrets. I run it as a docker on unraid and reverse proxy so I can access it remotely.

Feels a ton like YNAB.

Works on Windows, my macbook. The only missing thing IMHO is a dedicated mobile app (for Android in my case). The web works ok, but a dedicated app could improve the experience

I’m sure a lot of people’s self hosting journey started on junk hardware… “try it out”, followed by “oh this is cool” followed by “omg I could do this, that and that” followed by dumping that hand-me-down garbage hardware you were using for something new and shiny specifically for the server.

My unRAID journey was this exactly. I now have a 12 hot/swap bay rack mounted case, with a Ryzan 9 multi core, ECC ram, but it started out with my ‘old’ PC with a few old/small HDDs

So, my current whole house audio is powered by Chromecast Audios. Unfortunately they no longer make them. But you can still get them new off eBay. I know because I just bought 5 more (unopened from Japan) as part of finishing our basement

Mine feed two 12 channel (six room) amplifiers. I’ve got a mini in each room whose default speaker is the associated CCA and it works great. I have speaker groups so I can ask “hey Google, play music in the basement” and all rooms play.

Previously I used casatunes. They don’t do this anymore, but I bought a PCI card from them (it was a sound blaster hardware) but it was a 6 channel sound card and associated software that ran on windows IIS. It allowed both hardware and software streaming. I liked it but it never supported Google music and eventually I switched to the CCAs

I switched over to Actual last month, and am not looking back. I will miss the native android app, but it is an otherwise direct replacement. I was using YNAB4, and had forever.

I removed my account a few years ago when they moved a bunch of features behind their paywall. I’m perfectly fine just using Garmin’s built in ‘news feed’ and tracking without giving my data to another company.

Hope it stays that way.

There’s all kinds of people being born every day, growing up and becoming self hosting unRAID users. Meanwhile current license holders are growing older and dying off.

How is continuing to charge for new people to get into unRAID unsustainable? If it’s worked this long but isn’t now then increase the prices, or watch your overhead.

I’m here until my pro license starts costing me again. If that happens, I’ll likely jump just like I have done with other products I paid for that changed our original agreement.

Here’s to hoping!! I also worked with infosec group at my previous employer a lot and really grew to appreciate that field so I felt like a good fit !

I did this early on after realizing my mistake, promptly moved to vlemmy.net which after a couple weeks went totally mia.

Moved again… It’s a toss-up though. I want an instance big enough to stay updated, and have an active community, but not turn into .world or vlemmy.
