It is rather both sides, isn’t it?
But, after poking around lemmy, I have decided there is value in all instances. There will be communities nestled in between the stuff I do not like. I like and dislike much on lemmy

looking for a instance with the fewest trolls, bots, and anyone that likes to take things to the extremes.
All the instances are good in their own way, but at least one will irritate you very much, and it’s always different. There are ways each one can make you go “why???”
There are commenters who will call one or more instances bad things. That may or may not be accurate for you.
Each large instance has one or more crazy mods, all instances mostly have decent mods. Each instance will have multiple examples about why it’s good or horrible.
There are a huge number of lemmy users who are genocide deniers and hate many other things , including lemmy.ml and the developers

Cool !
Sounds more like a self replicating malware somewhere, probably in some totally unrelated Wordpress plugin on unrelated sites scattered about
Sometimes much older
The group of repos also is an alternate 4chan.
I have no clue about the code, haven’t looked, but it has consistent work done and some people use it. In this context, I would feel less good about the code if Pepe was not in the picture
People who support the server have greater voting rights; no revenue steam. But I think it would be cool to sell pirate plushies!
Unrelated: If you code it’s not hard to insert ads in between the comments on your own lemmy instance. It would be a cool experience but probably would create significant vitriol and site wide bannings by most, if not all, major instances for trying.
The problem for most monitization is psychological only ; many ideas would be an unwinnable uphill battle. Yes, can put ads in but also be a leper with zero traffic. You could probably put in perks if have good coding skills or can hire good skills; but if public relations done wrong then you are “poison to the community”.
You could try to do awards ( Reddit gold) but may get laughed off the platform. It’s a tough crowd
My home instance is starting to do some of this, it’s talked about a lot in https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/c/div0
The process makes file to read via http (not https), it’s just a nonce ( some random characters). Once their server reads that file, using the domain (and not the ip) and compares with what is expected, this shows you own the domain , and they give you a new ssl cert, modifying your server’s https configuration file (usually). And deletes the file it made .
Hi, just a guess. But
The retryafter=86400 value is too large (> 600), will not retry anymore.
Seems to me like the call to your server in the verification step is failing.
Do you have port 80 blocked or stopping the call in another way ?
This is the way
There is a long list of things those payment services will not do, and reliance on any of them makes a federated service a polite fiction, forcing each set of server admins to enforce and ban many things on the possibility it could shut them down .
It can only work with untraceable crypto, and even then we are back to the illegal market strategy, and why those markets are in the dark web, with most of them doing exit scams
Uphill, in the snow, both ways
Maybe lemmy will grow over time to include more types of people.
Social unrest may evolve this network faster than expected, in particular ways that are not foreseen. So, in my mind there are two paths for lemmy. A stable growth or chaotic .
Edit : unrest in any country that has a lot of lemmy users if alternative social networks clamp down or are unsafe to use
I’m not sure of what I’m talking about exactly, but I vaguely suspect that integrating with the fediverse will make some of their less ethical practices at tumbler too transparent and obvious.
But that is one part hunch and one part cynical belief, I don’t know of the details
