People forget web forums were way smaller than lemmy and ran just fine and were very active. Lemmy has a very different use case to mastodon. Since you don’t need individuals to latch onto. We are having a discussion on lemmy as equals around a topic not followers of a person like how a Micoblog is designed to be.

Honestly I feel the fediverse is like the 90s internet. It’s like school clubs centered around different interests and it takes a little bit of work to find your peer group but once you do it’s great. People that look to it as a replacement for Twitter are looking for a town square to shout at people and hock their wares. Anyone that makes money from engagement ether directly or indirectly are not looking for camaraderie but a market.

Nextcloud has file sharing i just use KDE Connect though.

Obsidian is not open source but i also think it’s pretty neat.

The point being made is really just the identity of user being tied to User@domain.tld vs @handle it seems like that concept has died with Web 2.0. Only thing I would improve of the fediverse. If communities could be merged with when a group of instances agree to form a network. Like how IRC does it with channels. I mean yeah there would be netsplits from time to time but it would cut down on duplication and increase the traffic of niche communities like the benefits of central platforms get but it’s still distributed.

Primary and secondary dns is not a thing. There is no priority for DNS. Depending on the device it will use ether address and will only try the other on failure.

doesn’t Synology NAS support SAN volumes out of the box? Then you just setup iscsi on the Linux system.

i honestly think a good way to do this is give communities the option to be apart of the same network and merge like IRC does. so you Federate to see different communities like we do now and merge posts from different servers as a layer on top to show one community. now do i know how to do that not a clue. I also think something like a side bar webring would work as well.
