  • Tankies feel like they push pseudo communism with the bourgeoisie still at the top giving scraps to the proletariat and passing it off as paltry socialism. There’s no societal change to the hierarchy, balance of power, or wealth. Usually some power of personality to rally around as their God who’s surrounded themselves with oligarchs who are enriching themselves and providing scraps to pass off as communist enough.

It’s more a weird ultra nationalism where proletariats are being tricked into thinking power has been given to the people when the ones at top are abusing their power to oppress forms of counter thought to seize whatever they want and retain their wealth. I wouldn’t consider them left just because there’s some form of socialism. Lot of countries do if at the very least they fix roads and have fire fighters.

The integration of authoritarianism just conflicts with my idea of communism, since my idea of communism is power to the people and one where the government fears the people because people control the means of production and they choose who stays in power. Not trading the usual suspects of kings, dictators, warlords, or whatever they call themselves for a different coat of paint.

  • Whatever the social media ability to “create” your own algorithm is important. One way being a subscription and sticking to it.

Second being keyword filtering. I use Connect for Android which let’s me filter out posts and communities containing keywords.

Same thing I do on reddit with reddit enhancement suite.

It’s just the nature social media where anone can sign up.

  • Yeah coming to lemmy and finding out about the so called communist reminded me more of those in favor of the small ruling elite like the pigs from Animal Farm was surprising. Not realizing they are the ones being sent to the glue factory while the pigs lounge around enjoying the lavish life in this so called communist workers paradise.

Reminded me nothing of socialists or at least what I think of socialism with it reminding me of more the monarchy. They seem more like nationalists who coopted socialism/communism to white wash what they actually support and overlooking the elite ruling class that they are not a part of.

Much like the fascists in Western countries who deny they are fascists and are for democracy while supporting ideas of coups for life time dictators that hold their views. Very similar groups.

  • I think because when it comes to Instagram or Twitter type social media more people probably use it only to follow accounts and have no interest in being involved in it. So closer to treating it like a rss reader than something like lemmy or reddit. And conversation feed sucks in general.

I use squawker for Twitter. Can’t comment, like, sub, or whatever and account follows are just local feeds like Stealth for Reddit or NewPipe or Freetube. And that’s all I need from it.

  • It’s gotten better for me, since the mobile apps available have gotten better. Initially I was using the website on mobile which felt clunky and filtering options aren’t great. But now with apps like Connect I’m able to curate instances and communities I see more easily, so it’s a more focused experienced than the default I had before. Apps really do make a difference. If these type of apps had been more mature in the beginning it would have helped initial adoption and retention.
