The mastodon and lemmy content I’m seeing feels like 90% of it comes from people who are:
-
~30 years old or older
-
tech enthusiasts/workers
-
linux users
There’s nothing wrong with that particular demographic or anything, but it doesn’t feel like a win to me if the entire fediverse is just one big monoculture.
I wonder what it is that is keeping more diverse users away? Is picking a server/federation too complicated? Or is it that they don’t see any content that they like?
Thoughts?
My controversial opinion: Filthy casuals ruined the internet some time early/mid 2000s.
Because when they started caring what happened online, that’s when big corporations and brands started caring too.
Plus the conversations during my 90’s days on IRC were just so different; I grew up in the middle of nowhere, and didn’t really have much in common with my peers. So when niggt came, and most people in my tiny town went to bed, that’s when my world woke up in the form of a modem dialup sound.
Back then I could expect that whoever I was talking to had a basic grasp on tech/internet by the virtue of being there. And on the off chance they didn’t, chances were that we still had a lot in common, for example seeking escapism.
