I would assume that people opposed to google apps and surveillance would also be unlikely to have business with door dash and co.

Yeah, exactly. What do they do to get around this? How do they make extra money without gig apps? How do they find gigs?

I think they mean to say, those people would not do that type of work.

So how do they make extra money in THIS economy without these gig apps? It’s not like the job market is good enough to get a second job.

Are you operating under the premise that by default everyone is using the gig economy to make extra money?

You are starting to sound like you’re trolling.

I don’t do gig work. So I suppose I could use one of these phones.

What a weird question. If you wanna do gigs from those slaver apps, it might be worth keeping a separate cell phone just for that.

Other than that, see what kind of work is available around your place.

How do you know what gigs are available? The whole thing with gigs is that you can make quick money, have a flexible schedule, and you don’t have to wait long periods of time just to get hired, despite not making much money.

How do you see what gigs are available without those slaver apps?

By going out and asking around. The more informal looking a place looks like, the more likely they are to do informal hiring for a quick buck for a single day. Chances of not finding any work are significant, tho

All of those apps will require playstore and no FOSS-only alternative will be popular enough to make you any money. You’ll either need to use a dedicated phone for those apps or you’ll want to start a lawn/snow shoveling service.

Do these sites not have regular web based interfaces that work for the gig worker? I know as a customer for many of these, I use the web on my desktop rather than my phone. It’s easier to read and navigate.
