Anyone here running the non-enterprise version perhaps? How have you found it?
Wondering about licensing too. If I were to create my own OIDC/SSO connectors on a fork of the code, strip out the EE stuff and deploy that fork, would that be a breach of license? Many of the features behind the paywall I find useful. I already run Authentik and have all my other apps behind it for SSO, so was curious how building my own stuff on my own fork would make me non-compliant (if at all).
I ran Docmost for a little while during my attempt to find a good place to put my self hosting documents and notes. It’s pretty good for a free version, I never used any SSO features though. My only problem with it was that it used like 600MB of memory just to sit there and serve static markdown files very occasionally.
Can’t answer the license stuff, but I’ve been using Docmost with a group of six other friends for about a year now and have enjoyed it. Mildly annoyed about some features locked on my fully self hosted and private instance but hasn’t been enough of an annoyance that I’ve cared to look for an alternative. We use it pretty regularly.
My actual biggest complaint is I made a feature suggestion a long time ago which someome was very kind enough to program and add a pull request, but the maintainer refuses to implement. Oh well.
Thank you for your response. This is very valuable feedback. I think I will stick to Bookstack for now, I have been using it for about 6-8 years now, and have been very happy with it. No fuss, it does the job.
From a glance, it looks like Silverbullet does almost all the same things, without having features behind a paywall. No build in MCP, but there are third parties, and not as much granularity in the permissions for each user. But OIDC and multiple spaces with real time editing, @ mentions and much more.
Up to now I have used Bookstack, and I love it. But now Docmost came across my table, and I was curious. Trying to compare apples with apples here.
I definitely think that Silverbullet fits in the same space as Bookstack and Docmost. I recently moved my notes and stuff to Silverbullet, and I really like the fact that it is just .md files on disk, with some very nice organisation around it, and extensibility with lua scripting and css styling. And OIDC - a must in my home lab :)
Forking is fine afaik - license snippet
When we speak of free software, we are referring to freedom, not price. Our General Public Licenses are designed to make sure that you have the freedom to distribute copies of free software (and charge for them if you wish), that you receive source code or can get it if you want it, that you can change the software or use pieces of it in new free programs, and that you know you can do these things.
