Hey all,

I use redlib instead of reddit for the info I still need to access on that platform. Recently, and with the API changes, the existing public instances being unreliabile cause of that I was maybe looking to host an instance myself. I don’t know if I wanna keep it private or not but in the scenario that I do make it a public instance, how would I manage this? Is it a good idea to host this in my home, cause I have a residential IP. I dont want to get that banned by reddit, so residential proxies? I assume a random VPN would be blocked. Also what about bot protection? Anubis and crowdsec? What specs would be needed for such an instance?

Thank you!

    Believe this is related: https://github.com/redlib-org/redlib/issues/598

It does to me seem the maintance of redlib has stagmated quite a bit lately. A lot of random forks woth supposed fixes etc. Afaik right now redlib is at least not able to read comments on posts, but can still view just the posts in feeds.

If you absolutely want to use reddit the look into using Morphe patches on the reddit app instead.

Your best bet is to stop using reddit and start a similar community here on lemmy

I use the libredirect extension so that when I end up with a reddit result in searches it redirects. But yeah most of the time it doesn’t work now.

I host an instance for my own personal use. It lives on my local network and nowhere else. I just use wg-tunnel on my phone to automagically VPN home when I’m out. It’s just not worth the headache to expose it publically IMO.

This is how I do it, and for good reason: Reddit aggressively rate limits API calls. I’ve read they’ve limited us to ~100 requests / 10 minutes. That’s fine if you run an instance just for yourself. If you’re hosting a popular public instance, chances are you’ll run into a brick wall pretty quickly.

I’ve been hosting this Redlib fork for my own personal use behind Netbird to access a couple of niche communities with great success.

    Oh yeah, specs.
The service runs dockerized in a Proxmox lxc Debian container next to searxng and uses little in the way of resources:
    0.61% of 1 CPU
    Memory usage
    21.95% (449.54 MiB of 2.00 GiB)
    Bootdisk size
    70.03% (8.20 GiB of 11.71 GiB)

Curious to hear what you find out as I thought about doing something similar as there is still one specific community that I follow on reddit.

Not sure what device you use to access Reddit, but have you tried the revanced patched APK on android? This might just solve your problem.

If there is something I want to find on reddit I just search the web and read from the webpage, sure I have not tuned my pihole to block all the ads out of it yet but it is so infrequent that I use it now. If I remember correctly reddit is weighed fairly high in my searXNG, I have a residential static IP so a lot of the big engines have blocked my searXNG but as I understand it they will block it even without a static IP. Bing is the big engine than I have and a bunch of little ones you would have to search out to find that get me my results.

You will likely run into the same issues many of the public instances are encountering, regardless of whether your instance is public/private or run behind a proxy or VPN. Either the main Redlib project requires updates to work through the recent Reddit restrictions or you would need to create your own fork (or use someone else’s) that works around the new restrictions.

Many of the other forks’ current work arounds require entering the credentials of a Reddit account. This either makes you identifiable if you keep the Redlib instance private (all traffic from the provided Reddit account is exclusively “your” traffic) or more likely to be banned if you make the instance public. Regardless, many using this work around assume any Reddit account used by this work around will eventually be banned.

It’s great that you are looking to selfhost this. However, if this is your first time selfhosting something then unfortunately I think it may be a good idea to try something else first due to some of the recent challenges Redlib is facing. To be clear, selfhosting Redlib isn’t necessarily challenging and is not a very resource intensive application, but it may be discouraging to get everything set up only to find out that your instance doesn’t work (like many of the other ones) or requires regular maintenance due to the changing Reddit restrictions.
