Hi everyone!
I’m really enjoying the Fediverse through Lemmy and Peertube.
Two creators I enjoy and follow on the Fediverse are Dash and Gardiner Bryant (both work on The Bryant Review) as their content is really enjoyable.
Sadly they are the target of my post as they shares their content on many different communities that I follow.
Today I had 5 times the same topic on RetroDeck (great project too) on my feed on Lemmy (Voyager).
It is the same on PieFed (Interstellar).
This is really annoying and I haven’t found a way to not show these duplicates. Do you know about one or is it worked on?
Also when crossposting, it would be great if everything appeared under on post. Is it feasible?
Sorry if it’s easy and I just missed it. In a way I hope it is because it would mean that the Fediverse is festure rich😇
Edit: Added Dash as she was in fact the one who published the article. Also it appears that the issue is only on mobile apps since both the browser of Lemmy and PieFed don’t have it.
Edit 2: Using the Progressive Web App of PieFed seems to have solved the issue for me
Oh my Gosh. Okay, this is me!
One creator I enjoy and follow on the Fediverse is Gardiner Bryant as his content is really enjoyable.
First off, thank you so much! Really appreciate you enjoying the articles we put out :) One think I might emphasize here though is that so far as the site goes, Gardiner and I are partners! This is one of my articles though (so I’m to blame for this appearing so often in your feed). In fact I’m 99.99% sure Gardiner doesn’t actually share his articles on Lemmy at all.
Sadly he ´s the target of my post as he shares his content on many different communities that I follow.
(And I’m ‘she’!)
I’m sorry it appears like this. It used to annoy me back when I was regularly on Reddit, when a post was cross-posted to a different community I’d have to follow that link, read their description of the post, then follow the link then go back a few steps to start/join the discussion in that community. Since joining Lemmy and sharing here (it has been a long time!) I just went against that grain and posted in the communities it was relevant to, to give each community a space to chat about it.
I had no idea your app was showing it this way, or that how I was doing this was annoying anyone. I’ll just go back to the age old cross-post method instead, going forward. Interesting that your app shows it this way, the one I use seems to do that for me.
Sorry to annoy you! It won’t happen going forward :)
Note that the post doesn’t necessarily go against your (re)posting style, but rather how it is represented in the apps. As others have noted, there are options that combine reposts, with Voyager (which is shown in OP’s screenshot) having an open issue ticket. Though you using the native repost function probably helps.
Thank you for your work, btw ❤️
There’s a few cross folk in here, whose comments (I can’t pretend don’t hurt a bit!) do disagree. I’ll just have to have a think how I share on here going forward. The last thing I want to do is annoy anyone, but it takes a user all of 2 seconds to click on my profile here and see I’m deeply invested in the fediverse and have been on Lemmy for years now.
I appreciate your comment, thank you for saying so!
Well just know that the professionalism with which you are handling this situation has shown your good character to people like me, who have not heard of your work before. It made me want to go check out your site and articles now.

In that case, have at it!
And thank you so much, what a kind comment to find :)
Hello,
Thank you for posting those aricles. I wouldn’t worry too much about crossposting, as you can see from the comments, there are apps and other software that deals with this better, so you shouldn’t refrain too much.
Well I didn’t you were Dash. I feel honored that you answered to my post.
I enjoy reading your articles on the Bryant Review and I’m sorry if I thought that Gardiner wrote the article about RetroDeck when in fact it was you.
Thanks for taking note of the fact that the method you were using was creating duplicates and I hope crossposting solves the issue (although half of the duplicates shown on my feed were from Lazorne and not from you). If not, it ain’t such a big deal, just a small annoyance.
At least everyone now knows that the Bryant Review and RetroDeck are great and deserve to be known for it!
Oh no problems!
I just shared an article (the full interview of my questions and answers with the DroidDeck team, which I turned into that feature article on our site!) which is on my NeoCities site, by cross-posting to three communities here. From what I see though it is the exact same issue again, just with a different method.
I think this is in fact a Fediverse issue, and not how I’ve been sharing articles to communities here. I’m sorry!
I only saw it on the games@lemmy.world community. On what other community did you post it too?
If people who subscribed to all of these comminities are seeing duplicates, I guess it’s really a Fediverse issue as I totally understand why you wanna post on many communities to reach more people.
Let’s hope a developper finds a way to solve it one day.
You’re not alone in this wish, though I’m sure that doesn’t surprise you. I sort of accepted it as just part of how a federated reddit-style forum would work, but if there’s a way to address it, that would be very cool.
Piefed addreses that, as you can see in the other comments.
http://piefed.blahaj.zone/ is run by the same team as your current instance.
I think they’d like posts merged not just comments.
Piefed merges posts (and has an indicator with the number of crossposts , on the same level as the comments counter see https://piefed.zip/c/privacy@programming.dev ) in the feed view.
I might have to switch to Piefed from mbin. Both are far better than Lemmy imo, but piefed is starting to leave mbin in the dust too. I keep hearing of ways piefed just does things better.
It’s worth a try!
Here’s how piefed handles it using the browser.

Piefed really is lemmy done right in many aspects
Im starting to discover this too… Just too stubborn to give in, and I don’t want the instance I am currently using to die.
Its so nice.

Piefed web interface does stack comments if cross posted, so I’m guessing the poster isn’t bothering to cross post if it isn’t showing that way in Intersellar.
I feel stupid asking but is perfect dark made aware of the problem with what you did? (Adding the @ before his name)
Yes, that’s a ping. If I do @dariusmiles2123@sh.itjust.works , you should get an additional notification for that ping.
Well I only got one notification but I guess it’s because you answered to my question and it would be stupid to have two notification (one for the ping and one for the answer)
If only Teams would do the same thing at my workplace
Direct messages with “Hi @firstname.lastname” really grind my gears
No hello is considered passive aggressive lol
Ah yes, there is probably a check for that kind of situations
Both Mbin and Piefed solved this.
Yes according to some people, but what apps do you use to not have the issue?
Because I’m mostly on the Fediverse on my mobile phone (iOS)…
Such a feature could make me switch from Lemmy/Voyager, although I really love Voyager UI and dislike Interstellar for now.
Ah, that’s where I can’t help I guess, as someone who doesn’t use mobile apps.
Yeah I checked and as you can see with these Lemmy and PieFed printscreens, it’s really the mobile apps which are not taking care of the issue.

Lemmy doesn’t really have much in the way of an “algorithm” and it really shows with stuff like this.
Mbin can combine posts like that and show comments from all of them, but I think it shows all posts in the main post view, it only combines the comments. I really hope in the future Lemmy combines crossposts into one posts. It’s something an app could do. But I’d love to see it in the default UI so it hopefully encourages all apps to support it too.
Well that would be a big plus for Mbin. Do mobile apps for Mbin also allow this?
yes, I am currently on the Interstellar app. I was shocked to learn this isn’t how Lemmy handles it. To me, it’s one of the features of the Threadiverse: Some posts are relevant to multiple communities/magazines and I might only be in one of them, but I still want to see the comments from the other posts. In mbin and interstellar, I see the posts in my feed, but it tells me where else it was posted, and shows me the comments from the other posts. Once I’ve read one, it marks the others as read too
At least with PieFed and Intestellar, I was seeing the duplicates the same way as on Lemmy/Voyager.

Block the spammer. Works every time.
I think some mobile apps get rid of the duplicates, although I’m not familiar with which ones do that. Unless someone else replies here, you could try posting to !lemmyapps@lemmy.world
For voyager it is an open issue
Sounds like a good feature request, to either Lemmy in general or whatever that app is, or both
Summit can mark dupes as read, so they’re at least dithered out

That one one thing I liked about Piefed. If only the creator wasn’t a man-baby.
PyLova has that feature as well: https://codeberg.org/quokkau/PyLova
Technically the default Lemmy UI does hide the dupes, although it may still be buggy. Probably worth revisiting this once v1.0 launches. I’m not sure which apps do and don’t do that though.
In Lemmy, no way.
In Tesseract (yes, that Tesseract!) there was a partial way, but only if the posts happened to come in as part of the same batch when accessing the instance. db0 helpfully made a fork of that, but the community outcry was so enormous that several instances simply dropped support of it entirely rather than switch to using that fork.
In PieFed, partially, but only for those sharing the same URL (like these examples probably do?) - so text-only posts do not qualify.
And then 3rd-party apps add a whole new dimension to this, by replacing the Lemmy/PieFed/PyLova/Mbin front-end with their own stuff. Note that Voyager provides only rudimentary support for PieFed. Overall, app support for the improvements that PieFed makes over Lemmy is still fairly shitty, sorry to say - note that you can tweak some settings in a web browser (like user blocks & such that are entirely impossible in Lemmy) and then that affects your using the 3rd-party app on a more daily basis, but many of the more advanced features of PieFed/PyLova are still inaccessible from most 3rd-party apps. See this wiki page for more details - like “Crosspost comment merge” is only supported in Interstellar, and some features (like a mod locking a post) is not available from any app, iOS or Android.
Lemmy is the same way - reducing such crossposts an extremely often-requested feature, for both software platforms, but so far I think only PieFed accessed via a web browser can do it even partially. Or certain 3rd-party apps (not sure which ones, though I’ve looked at several FLOSS offerings and did not see that - maybe only paid ones do?)
Hey,
Note sure if you’ve seen, but we’ve been making quite a few improvements to “old.piefed”, you can see a deployed version on https://old.piefed.zip/
It’s getting really close to feature parity (I added yesterday emoji reactions, title fetching and usernames and communities autocompletion) with the default Piefed UI, offering another option for people who want to give it a try on their phone. I do it myself, it works.
It’s not the same as a full fledged app, but while I can get around web development, mobile is a completely different beast, and I’m also not sure how happy mobile app devs are with external contributions, especially created using Claude.
Connect app stacks them together and shows the replies from each thread in batches
Surprised no one else mentioned it yet. Connect is the best app by far of any that I’ve used, and it’s fully ad free and privacy conscious. Has a ton of customization options and really great quality of life features.
My understanding is that Piefed does group the posts together, but that no apps currently implement that feature.
From Munkisquisher@lemmy.nz, it sounds like the Connect app does stack the posts, but that may be through their own feature and not Piefed’s (no idea). I just looked for a site or post that compared app features and couldn’t find one that listed grouping cross-posts.
My recollection is that Lemmy 1.0 may have cross-post grouping, but I don’t see it listed as a feature on 1.0 beta testing post.
