… where every platform communicates with every other platform. i’ve rarely ever seen a post from mastodon on here, and even if it’s technically possible, it doesn’t seem that it happens very often.

likewise, i’ve rarely if ever seen a post from lemmy on mastodon. these two platforms just don’t seem to interact much.

the fediverse is already very small. fragmenting it even further by having multiple services that basically don’t talk to each other is not good. we need to either (a) aggressively find a way to bridge certain lemmy communities to be more visible on mastodon, especially location-based communities, or (b) i think that i’ll have to decide to only use mastodon in the future, because that’s where all my irl-friends are (yes i have those too, i do not only exist in a terminally online state :) and because mastodon is bigger already and that’s why i think that it has a bigger chance of taking off.

so, what do i suggest should happen?

especially for location-based communities (australia, london, darmstadt, …) it should be more probable for people living in these locations to draw use out of the lemmy community. maybe it’s just a question of showing lemmy content from these communities on mastodon home pages, or auto-subscribing mastodon users to nearby lemmy communities. something like that.

We do need more cross functionality, plus we need instances with a clear set of rules enforced equally ending in a jury trial of users for major violations, rather than the feudal system we have.

We will never catch on as it now stands. 40k weekly users on lemmy is it?

While I do agree that not all platforms show all content, I would rather put the blame it on Mastodon, which decided to do whatever it wants and not invest in ActivityPub, only use it for its own benefit. I’m not surprised other platforms went the same way, although it is incredibly saddenin.

Try Mbin or PieFed, they got you covered. I think especially MBin is great to be part of both of these continents of the Fediverse world. PieFed is still missing some bits as of now.

Not so sure, i could subscribe from my Piefed account to Peertube channels, and get their videos in my feed. Im pretty sure it works from Lemmy too. And it feels like the Fediverse in action to me !

My Mastodon feed is full of Lemmy posts, the reverse is less true.

That doesn’t really change the fact that they aren’t identical use-cases.

This seem to stem from a misunderstanding. Lemmy and Mastodon have different goals. Users of each generally don’t want the other’s content generally showing up en masse.

If you want to see something from Mastodon, you can usually get it on Lemmy, and vice versa. I don’t often see Mastodon posts either, but that’s because I only follow Lemmy communities, so I only see them when someone on Mastodon tags a Lemmy community in their post. If you want to see more Mastodon content, see if you can follow some users or hashtags from Lemmy.

But that might not be supported; I haven’t tried. If you prefer Mastodon, I’m pretty sure that you can follow Lemmy communities from there.

I would really be fine following some Lemmy communities on Mastodon, but the Lemmy developers have made the absurd choice to have a community reblog every single comment made on one of its posts. Why??? Threadiverse users don’t see it like that, they just see the posts.

All posts and comments are Announce’d to make all posts and comments to the community visible to any subscriber. It’s Mastodon which does not filter these from timeline in any way and treats any Announce as a reblog a.k.a. boost

Because that was deemed the best way to let every subscriber of a community see all comments.

Unfortunately, if your software doesn’t explicitly filter them out, it clutters your timeline beyond recognition.

That’s Mastodon’s fault. The thing is that the comments are essential to lemmy. That’s why they are reposted. It’s just that Mastodon doesn’t implement groups well.

lemmy and mastodon are more than just activitypub frontends. mastodon is for microblogging where you follow users while lemmy and other threadiverse software is a discussion forum and news aggregator where you follow communities. it’s cool you can share some posts across these platforms but there is a reason you don’t see the same posts everywhere and that’s a good thing.

It’s quite trivial to follow a Lemmy community or user.from Mastodon. Then it’s just on your feed like normal. To post a new thread from Mastodon you just @ mention the community. On oirFed you can hashtag your post, too.

It’s really following Mastodon from Lemmy that’s a challenge. As there’s no mechanism to follow users or hashtags here.

i’ve had mastadon people interact with me on here, I think one followed me even. Not sure if I should’ve blocked them or not, I followed back. I think they had zero posts.

      Should I block?

Not every message the activitypub can send is suitable for every platform. Reddit style discussions just don’t map to Mastodon.

The most important thing is that lemmy, Mbin, piefed, etc. can communicate freely. You can try to build a platform that does it all but I think it will be messy.

false. lots of content would fit on both mastodon on lemmy. example post below:

Gaming Night tonight at Augsburgstraße 3, Neues Teehaus, Berlin.

There will be Nintendo games (or Boardgames or whatever) and KüFa.

      Everybody is Welcome to Join.

this can be posted on mastodon (from somebody who lives in berlin) or on the threadiverse in the /c/berlin community. it would fit both audiences equally well.

You misunderstood me. It’s not that the content is not relevant. It’s that the threaded discussion style just doesn’t map to Mastodon. Technically they can talk to each other but practically there is no sensible way to display the info on Mastodon.

The activitypub protocol that powers the fediverse is very versatile. So versatile that not every message can sensibly be displayed by every implementation.

Example: Mastodon does not support downvotes, lemmy and peertube do. In lemmy the descussion belongs to a group entity, in Mastodon everything belongs to a person entity.

Both are valid implementations of the spec but they use different parts of it that are relevant for them.

It’d be redundant. Why not just have it appear on all timelines? And it does … if a Lemmy user puts hashtags in it, or somebody for some reasons follows a Lemmy community, or if someone quote-boosts it (I don’t know if Mastodon allows it, but Misskey probably would) with the right hashtags.

I remember Mastodon was working on groups so I imagine interaction from Mastodon to Lemmy would improve. Bonfire is rolling out groups pretty soon it seems. I’ve been trying it for a while now and I access both microblogs and groups from Bonfire.

likewise, i’ve rarely if ever seen a post from lemmy on mastodon. these two platforms just don’t seem to interact much. the fediverse is already very small. fragmenting it even further by having multiple services that basically don’t talk to each other is not good

I think part of this is the initial desire to model Fediverse platforms after mainstream counterparts. So you have Instagram-but-federated, Twitter-but-federated, Reddit-but-federated, YouTube-but-federated, TikTok-but-federated. These platforms don’t really interact with each other directly, so the Fediverse ended up modeling that incompatibility, too.

That’s the area projects like Mbin and Bonfire seem to be better at.

You can view Lemmy content from other fediverse platforms like Mastodon. Either directly, via a user page, a community, a hashtag, following one of those things and seeing it in your feed, or just having it surfaced in one of the other feeds when the server knows it exists (probably from someone on the server following one of those things).

You can probably do the same thing from Lemmy. I see Mastodon posts pretty often when someone tags a Lemmy community.

Peertube actually maps to Mastodon quite well. You can follow channels, and every time they post a new video, you get a small (or not) post with the video title, description and hashtags, and a link to watch the video on the original instance.
