Fediverse@lemmy.world•What is stopping corporations from hijacking the Fediverse by hosting massive servers?English
11·10 months agoLike others pointed out defederation, but to add the important bit for normies (don’t mean derogatory at all) is that it is not meant to be a less complicated or more efficient experience, it is meant to have more (or actual) freedom and democracy.
Much like with gov politics, you have to be active to some degree or a few people can control everything.
So yes, when defederation needs to happen or communities moved (for much of that additional tools will streamline the processes in the future I’m sure), it’s a bit messy, but it doesn’t rob you or feed the megacorps pushing the society into more inequality.
So … not the combined works (verses) of the famous poet Fedy?

Yeah, was on Reddit almost daily since prob around 2008 too, up till only a bit over two years ago.
The anonymity within one account(name) is great, don’t need or want more for interaction online.
It’s great for introverted social interaction.
Call some fiends, there are lots of urinals still free!
I never told anyone I used Reddit, but I’ve def told many about Lemmy (within my foss propaganda I regularly administer upon the unsuspecting, if need be at the urinals).
(Still won’t ever share my username, I don’t like people like that)

9·11 months agoOh no, Metas profits!! How will they live in a slightly better world now?
It does seem like that.
(Be sure to thank the kit for its years of service)And if you triggered any failsafes they would have reset by now.
The mobo button battery can rarely make seem the mobo dead, but usually still does at least something.
(I’m not saying it’s likely, just that it’s the last thing I can think of)

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Using refurbished HDDs in my livingroom NASEnglish
2·1 year agoYeah, good advice.
For my parents house with NAS in their living room I still use WD Red Plus (not Red Pro), so pleasant & quiet (which was basically my only concern). But smol. Can’t find new ones as quiet tho.

Yes, it’s still easier to manage, transfer stuff, Proxmox Backup server integrates nicely, etc.
No, I didn’t mean with ceph. No quorum needed either. Just add to the group.
