Fediverse@lemmy.world•With the current situation with Tiktok, it's time for the Fediverse to rise.English
172·3 months agoThat’s the problem, since open source projects have no stable income and no profit incentive, there’s no one person to make tactical, executive decisions for the good of the project like these. I’m saying this because if open source ever wants to become a serious, competitive alternative (ie. have people turn to it out of convenience (90% of ppl) and not ideology or foresight (10% of ppl)), this is a weakness it’s going to have to engineer a solution to. I genuinely think you have to play the game to beat the game.

4·11 months agoI think somebody shoukd do an academic study on Lemmy, how it differs from Reddit, its weaknesses, and why it might be failing. So that there is a definitive cause to its weakness that can be pointed to for anyone willing to give it another shot.
Secondly, I think it might be a good idea for the admins of the servers to have a video call. This will make the (at least admin) community feel much more personal in a way that comment threads cannot and will lead to a stronger sense of community. Actually I’m impressed that Lemmy as a project has made it this far without the developers having ever been able to plan the project together in a group.

As a scientist, I would be cautious of inferring the reason and beating ourselves up for it until we have crystal clear proof that that is the specific thing that’s turning people away.
Imo post/comment scores should be hidden too. I’ve turned them off in my app and it makes for much calmer browsing

Programming@beehaw.org•Why is Rust being an overused programming language today?
1·1 year agoThe only thing I hate about rust is how it does not respect my hard disk. It downloads all the dependencies and staticly links them into each project. Hrrrrrr

Fediverse@lemmy.world•How about during the signup process(step) the user gets instance allocated randomly?English
5·2 years agoI know this process acts as a filter in itself, clearing the randoms and normies.
This could be retained by having instances opt into/out of random allocation of new users.

Interesting, I’m currently reading about Plurality (digital democracy), which decided to pick its own symbol (⿻) too.
I found myself telling myself, “Go on reddit today, don’t go on lemmy. You need a break from all the extreme constant politics”
This happened to me too. What I ended up doing was extensively muting communities that made any political posts in my feed and using a keyword filter (Sync supports this). My blocked words include Linux, Biden, Union, etc… Now my feed is mostly memes
Yeah, from the graphs above you can see that the number of monthly comments is growing, such is the main thing I suppose
