How do I find the accounts to follow? Is there a list somewhere?
I just typed “flipboard” into search in Tusky:
Thanks! This got me some other stuff mixed in, but searching “flipboard.com” worked well.
Yes, there’s also flipboard.social in those results which is worth noting through as people seem to be using that for link aggregator accounts too (especially as only a select few magazines have been brought over so far)
Try flipboard.social as well. I think they set that up for their ActivityPub offerings?
I found this list :
So it looks like it’s just Fedi accounts that link back to ad and signup-ridden webpages. Not sure what the “magazine” bit is about.
I spent hours trying to delete my fucking Outside account that I never even created in the first place. I’m never going anywhere near that shit again.
I can’t find a complete list, but McCue lists some examples here. These newly-federated magazines are apparently curated by the original 25 publishers in their initial test of federation. You can find the list of those publishers here. You should be able to find the magazines by searching for the publishers on Mastodon. Euronews’ Russia-Ukraine crisis magazine, for example, is:
@russia-ukraine-crisis-euronews@flipboard.comI was able to follow all the publishers I tried. I also followed a few of the new magazines. Seems to work!
Thanks for the info!
i tried to find a link/address to subscribe to… nothing. maybe its not setup yet but i couldnt find an iteration of @%magazine@flipboard.com that returned valid AP responses
e. theres only 25, its not listed anywhere what the 25 are, but there are a few examples that work. yawn. wake me up when they open it up. @Photowalks@flipboard.com worked
This is a two-way bonus. If a Flipboard user, you can post an article to Mastodon with just two taps. The magazines themselves can now also be followed via ActivityPub.
Flipboard CEO, Mike McCue is a big booster of decentralization and also has a podcast where he covers others in the space.
More original content flowing into the Fediverse. This is all good.
Flipboard still exists? I remember when the concept of digital magazines were all the rage back in the late 2000s/early 2010s, I tried various apps multiple times and it was always so much more cumbersome to use than a physical magazine.
Yes they still exist. And they’ve stopped posting on Twitter and are actively participating in and promoting the Fedi, which I personally appreciate. That takes courage.
Is this what people were referring to as “zines”?
Yeah
i wonder how seamless this will be since mbin even uses the term ‘magazine’ for its groups/forums.
anyone familiar with this content? curious if this is a good source or maybe just a corporate ad pipeline
I always disregarded it since it came as bloatware on my old samasung phones
It’s a bit of both, tbh. I use both it and Apple News for news curation. Flipboard is by far more ad-centric (and AN has more content) but Flipboard is pretty customizable for identifying topics so I keep it around. Flipping through it, every second or third page is an ad, but most of what they link to is available (at least for me) and they’re not overly swamped with clickbait (again, at least in my feed).
I probably use it about 1/3 as much as AN.
IMO stick with mbin/kbin. Flipboard literally “flips” news from other sources and rebrands it.
I’m not sure about their citation and recommendation methods but they appear to be algorithmic? So yeah, I’ll take a human-curated aggregator any day.
So it’s a corporate aggregator site that rebrands articles from other platforms and now posts links to the fediverse? I think I’ll subscribe to some more Lemmy and Kbin subs instead, thank you.
I know, it just looks like an RSS with extra steps, regardless I think it is cool.
