This might be a somewhat unusual post, but I’ve made a pledge to myself to financially support Fediverse creators whose content I enjoy and I’d like to make an attempt to inspire others to do the same.

I want to make it very clear that the amount you donate does not matter! It’s not a competition.

I make small donations (~1-5$/mo) to some of my favourites because I plan on supporting them indefinitely which is usually better than one-time donations. This unfortunately also means that it will require multiple people to work well, but if we can build a reputation for the Fediverse as a place where people are likely to support your work then it would naturally become more appealing to post here.

I use Liberapay whenever I can because it lets me choose how much I want to donate and how frequent which makes this easy to manage.

You can of course experiment with the conditions (e.g: type of creators), the donation amount or donation frequency. Use what works for you, and again, what matters is that you support someone, not the amount!

As a creator myself, much appreciated. I wish more people would do this.

And folks, if you can’t or don’t want to give someone money, even just clicking the like button, boosting/retweeting, or leaving a comment is a great way to help a creator for free.

Making videos is a fun hobby, but lots of work, and I think most people don’t understand the amount of work that goes into it.

Like others have already said, “creators” isn’t just video creators. I support people and organisations from Mastodon as well for example in addition to developers building the platforms/clients.

Since you’re on a Lemmy server, you could consider supporting that specific server or Lemmy development in general.

True. I do support a few foundations like wikimedia, EFF, Calyx, WWF, Arbor Day, etc. I mostly try to support what I feel are necessary for technology or information, and humanity/life.

I could support my instance. I guess I don’t consider the server owner(s) “creators”, bc they run the instance, not “created” Lemmy, but I guess they “created” Lemmy.today. I’ll have to look into that.

I wonder if there are donation platforms that you could donate to, so you make 1 donation and it gets divided among a group. Like an index fund but for nonprofits. The point would be it’s easier for someone to make one donation that helps a lot of groups they may not be aware of or that it exists.

There could be a tech group, humanitarian group, etc. If one doesn’t exist, maybe I’ll look into that too. It’ll be hard to determine who gets what percentage, unless it’s just pooled and split evenly every month. Might be the best method. As new foundations or orgs are added, it’ll just redistribute accordingly.

The Tor project actually did something like that this year, maybe they’ll do it again in the future. There are probably more campaigns like this but I haven’t looked deeper into it.

Well there’s daffy.org and every.org that looked promising, but their privacy policies tell a different sorry. They’re probably supporting themselves through sustained data sales of trends, search terms, company tracking, etc. Pretty shitty to monetize people generosity if you ask me.

I know it’s basically the norm and the general public are numb to it, but it keeps nerds like me at bay from touching those platforms. I’ve worked hard to eliminate spam calls, texts, and snail mail, and emails; and I’m not going to be bombarded from donating my money.

I would consider creators to also be those who build the platforms we use on the fediverse too.
